Benefits of Using a Solar Water Heater

For some folks living in warming climates like Toowoomba or Mackay, it may just be too much of a hassle. However, we are living in a time when people aren't using a lot of their water just to avoid the heat. We are relying on solar energy and filling our water tanks so that we don't have to boil the water like we used to. And these solar water heaters do work!

How Is Solar Heating Installed?

Solar water heaters are installed by installing the solar panels, wiring them, and adding some insulation to the water tank. A water heater is a self-contained unit. You don't have to worry about installing a water heater in your basement. Instead, the solar panels will generate enough heat to heat the water in your house. And because the water has already been heated you don't have to run a pump just to add the water you have already consumed to the water tank. Solar water heaters have become so popular that they are often sold at big box stores like Walmart.

There is a need to worry about pumping cold water from your well.

We've decided to install a solar water heater, and we just had to fill you in on what we did. Since we weren't expecting to have any water problems we had the solar hot water installation on the outside of our home. We went out and bought the coolest solar water heater we could find. The unit is solar-powered and uses some interesting design techniques to help it generate the most heat.

We built a box, and it has the base built so that you can add some insulation to the bottom of the box. So instead of a 10-gallon tank and a pump, you have a 5-gallon tank and a pump. Then we ran a pipe from the pump to the tank. This setup gives you a water tank at the base and then the pump inside the box that pumps the water to your house. And since the water that you put in has already been heated the water stays warm longer. The pump also provides a bigger surface area to operate so that the water can cool down faster. And because the pump is inside the box the water is warmed without any air conditioning.

This allows you to have warm water throughout the winter! But since the pump doesn't produce heat, it would take a lot of water for the heater to heat the water. And in our case, that would be a lot of water. We are running a 5-gallon tank for the solar heater. To get the water we first also mean that there is no need to pump cold water from our well. Instead, we will just use the water that we are using to fill up our tank. And the solar heater will use heat from our water to heat the water and produce it hot enough.
